After years of guiding rivers throughout the country, we, the Pernick family—siblings, Brian and Sarah, and Brian’s wife, Katie—fell in love with the lush scenery and versatility of the Sauk and Suiattle rivers. Together we founded Adventure Cascades with the goal of sharing our love of the outdoors and our appreciation for the river.
This passion is echoed in each member of our team. By promoting wilderness awareness and offering an extensive knowledge of the rich history and wildlife that exists within the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Adventure Cascades strives to enrich the lives of people of all ages while facilitating unbridled fun.
We believe the key to having a great trip is an exceptional team. Our experienced white-water runners take pride in providing safe, low stress, river trips so you can focus on having a blast. Read on to get to know of each of our skilled staff.
Growing up on the many lakes and rivers of Michigan, Brian has been a water enthusiast since he can remember. From Pennsylvania and West Virginia to Idaho and Washington, he has guided numerous trips and has loved every minute of it. After graduating college with an engineering degree, he took a job in Seattle and spent two years working in a carpet covered, cardboard box dreaming of owning his own rafting company.
When it came time to make his dream a reality, Brian had no hesitations about choosing the rivers of the Cascades as his base. His determination to make Adventure Cascades the best rafting company available is evident by his commitment to quality and his vast knowledge of the area. Whether you’re interested in geology, wildlife, fishing techniques or history, Brian is primed to answer any questions you might have. He is also a dauntless boater. If you’re in the boat with him, be ready for a wild ride!
Coming to us all the way from the Bluegrass state of Kentucky, Katie began rafting the murky waters of the New and Gauley rivers in West Virginia. She later moved on to guide in California and Idaho, where she met Sarah and Brian.
Upon arriving in Washington, she immediately fell in love with the clear and free-flowing rivers surrounded by expanses of lush greenery and decided this was the place for her.
Katie loves being on the water and wears a permanent smile any time she is. She says, “…its soothing to the soul—even on the big waves—and there is nothing like a giggle and scream from your crew when you nail a big wave. It’s for these moments that I still love doing this.”
In her spare time Katie works as a registered nurse in the emergency department in Bellingham.
Much like her brother, Sarah’s love of rivers was developed at a young age in Michigan. She began her guiding career in Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania on the Youghiogheny River and spent the next couple of years running white water all over the Appalachian Mountains.
Next, Sarah moved west to spend her summers guiding trips in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, and Washington, while her winters were dedicated to skiing and snowboarding the best snow she could find.
Sarah’s life-long appreciation and expertise in all things water has been a major force in the creation and fulfillment of Adventure Cascades. She revels in providing high-quality adventures and is excited to share her knowledge, experience, and passion with you.
